This practical workshop explores the application of Kodály-inspired approaches within a primary instrumental band program. Designed as an active learning experience demonstrating how Kodály principles can meaningfully underpin instrumental instruction in the primary years, the session encourages delegates to bring instruments and participate throughout.

The session models how core Kodály strategies, such as singing-based preparation, sequential skill development, and internalisation of musical concepts, can be embedded within a band rehearsal context. The band repertoire, composed and arranged by Veronica Marrie, is intentionally aligned with the learning strategies taught by the specialist music teacher.
The workshop concludes with a short case study presentation of the primary band program at St Paul’s College, which commenced in 2026. This includes the College’s collaboration with Dr Anita Collins to develop an evidence-based approach when gathering baseline and longitudinal data to evaluate the long-term impacts of this program on student’s holistic educational developments. Particular focus will be placed on how data is used to communicate the impact of instrumental music learning to families and the wider school community, supporting advocacy, engagement, and program sustainability.

This session will benefit Kodály educators in classroom, choral, and instrumental settings who are seeking practical strategies for integrating musicianship-based pedagogy into band and ensemble programs, as well as approaches for articulating and promoting the educational, emotional and social impacts of instrumental music learning.
