Promoting a Singing and Musical Culture in Regional Public Schools.
- Wednesday, 30 September
- 3:45 pm
Using a Kodály-inspired approach has been instrumental in inspiring and evoking change at regional public schools, on the coast of NSW. Where surf and sport has always reigned king, Imogen Stewart has been building and embedding a singing culture with high school and primary students and staff. Initial challenges included student resistance, stigma surrounding singing, and staff uncertainty. By positioning singing as a central and shared musical experience, consistent and inclusive vocal opportunities were gradually introduced across the schools in ways that were accessible and non-threatening for students of all abilities.
In this interactive workshop, Imogen will share key strategies including whole-school assembly singing, the establishment of a student choir, and the introduction of a casual karaoke club, each providing different entry points into singing and music participation. She will share initiatives in the up-skilling of music teachers, with a focus on Kodály principles and confidence in leading singing-based activities to enhance the whole school approach in singing.
Imogen will also share key Kodály-based practices such as singing games, solfa, movement, and sequential skill development that worked with reluctant high school and primary school students to strengthen musical literacy, build confidence, and foster a sense of belonging. Imogen will share strategies of how singing can change lives, both students and staff, as a unifying force within a school, supporting student wellbeing, musicianship, and community engagement in a public school setting.
