The South Australian Public Primary Schools (SAPPS) Music Society oversees the Primary Schools Festival of Music, in partnership with the South Australian Department for Education. For 135 years, the Society has delivered a statewide choral program that began in 1891 with the Thousand Voice Choir and now involves more than 8,000 primary students. The program culminates in annual concerts at one of Adelaide’s premier venues, along with popular regional and outer metropolitan festivals. It is a cherished intergenerational tradition, with former choir members returning to watch their children and grandchildren perform.
Beyond the massed choir, students up to Year 11 can audition for the orchestra, from years 5-8 for the dance troupe, students from years 5-6 are in host roles, and there are soloist opportunities for choir members, all of which contribute to the vibrancy of each performance.
The South Australian Public Primary Schools Choir (The SAPPS Choir) is the showcase ensemble for the Festival and the Department for Education. Made up of auditioned students from Years 5–7, the choir rehearses weekly and provides an extension program for highly capable young musicians. Its repertoire is challenging and diverse, spanning multiple genres and styles.
We would welcome the chance to share the Festival of Music story with SING MOVE THRIVE Kodály conference participants. Despite challenges over the past five years—including COVID 19 and venue changes—the Festival has continued to adapt and flourish. Our presentation would include program insights, performance footage, teacher and student resources, and a preview of the recently completed 2026 concert series. The SAPPS Choir could also perform selected pieces for conference attendees. It would be a wonderful opportunity to showcase this iconic South Australian program to educators from across Australia and beyond.
